The Oldest Toothpaste Recipe in the World
Posted on Oct 01, 2019
Long before the advent of Crest and Colgate, in the fourth century AD, an Egyptian scribe recorded a toothpaste recipe on a piece of papyrus that is now housed in a museum in Vienna.
The recipe called for one drachma (1/100th of an ounce) of rock salt, two drachmas of mint, one drachma of dried iris flower, and 20 grains of pepper. The scribe said that when crushed and mixed together, this made a “powder for white and perfect teeth.”
The discovery of this ancient recipe has researchers exploring and reintroducing the beneficial properties of the iris flower in dentistry. Thanks to more than a thousand years of advancements in dentistry, you don’t need a mortar and pestle today for a good tube of toothpaste!

Chronic Gum Disease and Alzheimer’s
Posted on Aug 01, 2019
Scientists have given us another good reason to take good care of our teeth and gums. They recently discovered gum disease bacteria in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients.
It appears that gum disease bacteria can make its way from the mouth to the brain. The bacteria secretes a toxic protein that can destroy brain neurons. It also increases a component of brain plaques that have been associated with Alzheimer’s.
More research is under way to learn more about the connection. Meanwhile, floss and stay on top of your dental health with regular check-ups.

Are You Brushing Your Teeth with a Bacteria-Ridden Toothbrush?
Posted on Jun 01, 2019
Here are some best practices that can minimize bacteria.
1) Shake excess water off your toothbrush after you rinse it. The longer moisture stays on your toothbrush, the more bacteria will be encouraged to grow.
2) Replace your toothbrush immediately after an illness. It’s unlikely that a toothbrush will reinfect you with a flu or cold after you’ve been sick, but the bacteria on your brush could cause a different virus and/or lead to dental problems.
3) Store your toothbrush in an upright position, so water will drain away from the head.
4) Store your toothbrush away from other toothbrushes. 5) Replace your toothbrush at least every three months. Regular dental cleanings will help keep your smile white and bright.

Are Dental X-Rays Really Necessary?
Posted on Apr 30, 2019
Just as it can be difficult or impossible to diagnose car trouble without looking under the hood, dental x-rays allow your dentist to see and detect problems that may be lurking below the surface of your gums.
Dental x-rays can help detect cavities, abscesses (infections), and diseases not visible to the naked eye. It can also detect bite and other jaw bone problems.
At Discovery Smiles, we want to ward off painful future problems for our patients, so we recommend occasional dental x-rays. They are quick and painless!
